Handmade DIY Stencilled Door Mat Craft Project - Personalised or Customised Gift

Message Mats

Make an entrance by designing your own door mat.  Hand-make a bespoke, customised, personalised original and unique creation.

Add that personal touch as you welcome visitors into your home.  Jon’s Place’, ‘Welcome’ or ‘Hello’. You can be as creative as you like, and even add a picture.  They are unique, traditional and functional.

You will need:
  • Coir mat (we bought ours from Argos for only £3.49 - here's the link).
  • Alphabet stencils (we used DecoArt "Varsity Stencil" - here's the link).
  • DecoArt "Multi-surface Satin" (we used black - here's the link).
  • A stiff craft brush or dabber/dauber.
  • A bowl full of water.
  • Kitchen Roll.

  1. Work out the spacing for your message/design.
  2. Secure the first letter in place (you can hold it down firmly or use masking take).
  3. Using a well-loaded brush, paint inside the stencils and slightly over the edges.  Initially I used a dabber but switched to a brush as it gave better results.
  4. Move the stencil and immediately place it in a bowl of water.  Remove the paint. Place the stencil on kitchen roll to dry.
  5. Repeat until your message/design is complete.
  6. Allow to dry overnight.
